What Is Kendo?

Kendo is a modern Japanese martial art that originated from the traditional swordsmanship practices of the samurai. The word "kendo" translates to "way of the sword" in English.

It emphasizes the use of a bamboo sword called shinai and protective gear, allowing practitioners to engage in full-contact sparring while maintaining a high level of safety.

What Do I Need To Practice?

All participants must be members of the NOAC and over the age of 16. Other than that, all you need is athletic clothing, we will provide shinai for new students to use.

Students will eventually be expected to purchase their own gear. This includes a uniform (kendogi and hakama), armor (bogu), and practice swords (shinai).

Why NOAC?

We considered many options for choosing place to host our dojo, and we found that our individual monthly membership dues would be only slightly lower elsewhere, and for a significantly inferior practice space.

NOAC provides a beautiful practice space, a large variety of group fitness classes, a vast gym, pool, steam room and sauna, boxing room with heavy bags, and a host of other amenities for only slightly more than paying for kendo alone.
